The best and worst airports in the world 2018

The best airports in the world

eDreams has analysed over 50,000 reviews over the last year to bring you its selection of the best and worst airports to visit in 2018. The reviews come from travellers who visit the airports, taking into account different factors that affect people's airport experiences. They also consider the availability and quality of restaurants, shopping facilities, and waiting areas.

The list has had a considerable shake-up with only three of last year's top 10 making a reappearance. There is a new best, and a new worst airport. See below for the rankings of the best and worst airports, and a quick overview of our study.

The top 10 contains a few old friends, and a few surprises. Seven airports on the list weren't there last year. Zurich, Munich, and Frankfurt's airports made reappearances in the top 10. German airports (including Düsseldorf Airport) took out places 5 to 7 on the list.

Eight of the top 10 airports are located in Europe, though notably the top spot is occupied by Singapore Changi Airport and Istanbul Atatürk Airport sits at number 3. Last year's list showed some continental diversity with Bangkok International Airport and Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, but neither made the cut this time round. Other list drop-offs included airports in Helsinki, Glasgow, Geneva, Oslo, and Dublin.See last year's top 10 airports list here.

The 5 worst airports in the world

Rank Airport Country Score
1 Casablanca Mohammed V airport (CMN) Casablanca, Morocco 3,19
2 Rome Ciampino airport (CIA) Rome, Italy 3,21
3 Berlin Tegel airport (TXL) Berlin, Germany 3,30
4 Berlin Schoenefeld airport (SXF) Berlin, Germany 3,33
5 London Luton airport (LTN) London, United Kingdom 3,56

While German airports scored well in this year's top 10, the country is also represented in the worst airports list. Two of the capital's airports, Berlin Schoenefeld Airport and Berlin Tegel Airport, came in at number 3 and 4 respectively. This is probably related to the fact the city's new Berlin-Brandenburg Airport - set to replace these two - has been repeatedly postponed and as a result the older airports have not been upgraded for some time. Berlin Schnoenefeld and London Luton airports made a reappearance from last year's worst airports list. Two of last year's worst airports were in New York - LaGuardia and J. F. Kennedy airports - but neither appeared this time. The worst airport in the world this year is Morocco's Casablanca Mohammed V Airport.

Best airports by category

Best airports
for eating

  1. Bogotà-El Dorado Airport
  2. Zurich Airport
  3. Madrid Barajas Airport

When it comes to the best selection of restaurants, El Dorado Airport in Bogotà, Columbia is the place to be. Back in Europe, Zurich Airport made the top 3 again, joined this year by Madrid Marajas Airport. Allowing passengers to pick from a large number of restaurants that provide special and service specific styles of food is highly appreciated by people in transit who want to enjoy a meal before or after their flight.

Best airports
for shopping

  1. Singapore Changi Airport
  2. Franz Josef Strauss
  3. Zurich

Zurich Airport was again the only constant from last year on this list, joined by Franz Josef Strauss Airport in Munich and the overall winner Singapore Changi Airport. While waiting before boarding a flight or during the downtime on a stopover, passengers enjoy being able to shop around and buy whatever is missing in their baggage, be it for pleasure or for need.

Best airports
for waiting areas

  1. Zurich
  2. Singapore Changi Airport
  3. Heathrow

Nomatter how many lists we create, Zurich Airport seems to always make it into a top spot. And it's no exception when it comes to waiting areas. London's Heathrow Airport is a new addition to the top 3 this year. Waiting areas for the departure of a flight are crucial for passengers and also for those that must spend the night at the airport and look for the best places to sleep, taking in consideration comfort and safety.
