Undoubtedly Ukrainian’s most well-known dish is borshch. It is a staple food in every family and served in restaurants throughout Lviv. Borshch is a stir-fry of beetroot and tomatoes added to a hearty vegetable soup – the vegetables can vary but typically include onions, carrots and/or cabbage. Other classic dishes include varenyky (traditional dumplings) and banosh with brynza (cornmeal porridge with sour cream, sheep’s milk cheese, pork rind and mushrooms). Sweet dishes include paska, a sweet bread traditionally served at Easter.
Ukraine has some wonderful handicrafts that make great souvenirs or gifts, such as Easter eggs painted with folk designs, knitted faceless motanka dolls, handwoven woollen blankets, embroidered shirts and necklaces with embossed hanging crosses, known as zgarda. There are also many food items you could bring home. Lviv is well-known for its handmade chocolates, or you could also search out Ukrainian honey or cheese.
