What to do in Marrakech?
One reason for Marrakech’s popularity as a visitor destination is its great diversity. Mediaeval landmarks, timeless markets, modern facilities, and the surrounding natural environment are all here. Here are a few suggestions of things to do, but you’ll also enjoy many pleasant surprises as you discover the city’s hidden gems for yourself:
Visit Jemaa el-Fnaa: This famous square is a terrific example of organised chaos at its best. Artists, musicians, sellers, snake charmers, fortune tellers, acrobats and much more are here day and night. It’s busy, bustling, noisy, and just a great place to be.
Relax and refresh in a Hammam: Hammams are similar to Turkish bath houses and a great place to enjoy some well-deserved pampering. Enjoy the sauna and spa treatment with a professional massage, too. You’ll feel invigorated after it and ready to take on anything the city throws at you.
Explore the souks: Marrakech has plenty of souks – colourful and exotic bazaars where you can choose from a mind-boggling array of goods and merchandise on display in a labyrinth of narrow alleyways. Buy whatever takes your fancy, but never pay the initial asking price; haggling is the order of the day.
Attend a festival: Marrakech has an impressive range of festivals held throughout the year,. Depending on when you choose to visit, you may get to see one or two. Local festivals include the Marrakech Folklore Festival showcasing traditional music and dance, the Marrakech Festival of Popular Arts, the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Sun Festival, offering five days of local and international musical events throughout the city. The festivals are held annually but dates aren’t always fixed, so check what’s going on and when they’ll be held.
With so much to keep you occupied in Marrakech, you’ll probably wish you had booked a longer holiday in Marrakech from our all inclusive holiday packages – but there’s always next time.
What to visit around Marrakech?
If you want to get out of the city for day trips, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice on things to do. You can take a day trip to Ouzoud Waterfall, the highest waterfall in North Africa, or visit the spectacular Atlas mountains that range from Morocco all the way to Tunisia. Hot-air balloon trips over the Atlas mountains are also available if you’re feeling adventurous. A camel ride at the edge of the Sahara Desert might seem tame after that, but it’s available and worth doing if only to boast that you’ve crossed the Sahara on a camel (no need to mention it’s just a tiny part of it, within sight of the city). Our excellent flight and hotel deals make it all possible and your package holiday to Marrakech and its fascinating surrounding areas will be a wonderful experience.
What to eat in Marrakech?
Marrakech is famous for its exquisite blends of spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric, saffron, pepper and more. Tanjia marrakshia is just one of many local dishes. Comprising of beef slow-cooked in a traditional oven, it’s delicious and very popular. Moroccan ghee, called ‘smen’ is often used in Moroccan cuisine for basting many foods to give a distinctive texture and flavour. A delicious dessert commonly served in Marrakech is chebakia, which are cookies with sesame seeds. Another is cheesecake with dates.
