Checked baggage allowance
The total dimensions of all checked baggage for Germanwings flights must not be larger than 158cm.
The standard checked baggage weight allowance for any individual item is 23kg. This can be increased to a maximum of 32kg for a fee. Any item over 32kg will not be accepted as checked baggage and will require repacking.
Passengers are charged for each item of baggage they wish to check onto the flight. Each item of checked luggage will be charged according to which weight category it falls within. Items must be booked either before or during the check-in process otherwise an excess baggage fee will be charged.
Germanwings does not charge extra for the transport of skis and snowboards, though items of sports equipment such as golf clubs, scuba diving equipment, and bicycles will be subject to a fee.
Flying with Germanwings
Germanwings is a low-cost German airline. A fully owned subsidiary of Lufthansa, Germanwings started a merger process with sister company Eurowings in October 2015 in which both airliner's destination pool and fleet were combined. On October 25th 2015, Eurowings took over 55 routes previously operated under the Germanwings brand with more destinations to be taken over during the merger process, due to be finalised in April 2016. Currently carrying over 16 million passengers to over 80 destinations across Europe, Germanwings fleet of 62 aircraft consist of 43 Airbus A319-100 and 19 Airbus A320-200 airliners. With headquarters in Cologne, Germanwings also has bases across the whole of Germany at Berlin Tegel Airport, Dortmund Airport, Düsseldorf Airport, Hamburg Airport, Hannover Airport, and Stuttgart Airport. Passengers checking in using the Germanwings online service are able to select their preferred seating arrangement.
Airport check-in desks are available at all airports operated by Germanwings. Passengers are not required to pay any extra fees for checking in at the airport.
Cabin luggage allowance
The maximum dimensions of cabin luggage for Germanwings must not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 20 cm.
The maximum weight of cabin luggage for all Germanwings flights is 8kg.
Each passenger is allowed to carry 1 item of cabin luggage and 1 personal item such as a laptop bag, handbag, or briefcase.
Any item of cabin luggage that is in excess of the dimensions or weight allowance will need to be repacked or submitted as checked baggage in order to be permitted onto the aircraft. In these situations an excess fee will be charged.
