Flying with Jetstar
Jetstar is a low-cost airline with headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, and is a subsidiary of Qantas. Jetstar was founded in 2003 and instantly described itself as “Australia's No. 1 Low Fares Airline”. With a fleet of 70 Airbus and Boeing aircraft, Jetstar serves 70 destinations in Oceania, Asia and North America. Although still a relatively new airline, Jetstar has already claimed a number of aviation awards including Skytrax’s “Best Low-Cost Airline for Australia/Pacific” in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the About.com “Reader’s Choice Award for Best International Budget Airline” in 2011, and the AsiaOne “People’s Choice Award for Best Budget Airline” in 2010. Jetstar has carried over 140 million passengers since its launch in 2003, including 20 million in 2013. Placing an emphasis on punctuality, over 80% of Jetstar flights land within 15 minutes of the stated arrival time, ensuring passengers don’t lose any time on their holidays.
Online check-in
Passengers flying with Jetstar can check in online up to 48 hours before the scheduled flight departure time. Online check-in services close 60 minutes before take-off for all Australian, New Zealand or Japanese domestic flights, and 120 minutes before take-off for all other international flights. Passengers can also check in for their return flight provided it is within 7 days of their outbound flight.
Passengers travelling with infants are unable to use the online check-in service, as are passengers who booked their Jetstar flight through a third party travel agency.
Passengers who check in online are still required to present relevant travel documentation such as passports, visas and boarding passes at the airport terminal.
When checking in online, passengers are able to select their seating preferences.
Airport check-in desks are available for passengers who cannot or do not wish to check-in online. No extra charge is incurred for passengers checking in at the airport.
Cabin luggage allowance
All cabin luggage carried onto a Jetstar flight must not exceed the maximum dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm. For domestic flights within New Zealand, the cabin luggage size must not exceed 38c x 34cm x 23cm due to reduced aircraft space.
The maximum weight for cabin luggage items is 7kg for all destinations.
1 piece of carry-on baggage is allowed per person. An additional smaller item, such as a lady’s handbag or laptop case may also be brought on-board. An extra piece of cabin luggage may be purchased when booking the flight or during the check-in process.
Passengers carrying cabin luggage that is larger or heavier than the defined limitations will have their luggage placed in the hold and charged a checked baggage fee.
Checked baggage allowance
The sum of the 3 dimensions of 1 piece of check baggage must not exceed 158cm for all domestic and international Jetstar flights.
Passengers can purchase either a 15kg, 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg or 40kg baggage allowance when booking their flight or when checking in.
Passengers that haven’t added checked baggage to their booking and arrive at the airport with checked baggage will be charged for the first 15kg of baggage allowance per passenger and then for every additional kilo after that at the per kilo rate. Additionally, passengers who have added checked baggage to their booking but arrive with more than the allowance will be charged for excess baggage.
Passengers on all flights excluding those to Cairo and North America are entitled to 1 item of checked baggage. Passengers flying to or from Cairo or North America are entitled to 2 items.
Some items of sporting equipment, such as surfboards and bicycles will be charged a fixed handling fee because of size, fragility, or other handling requirements, whilst others may be checked in as part of a purchased baggage allowance.
