Barbados figures on top of the list of favourite Caribbean travel destinations, and it is completely justified. Boasting year-round sunshine, palm-fringed white sandy beaches, stunning turquoise seas and a wonderful blend of cultures, the country is distinctly one of a kind. Listen to Calypso music, dig into Pudding and Souse or enjoy a few shots of the spiced rum the island produces from its sugarcane plantations. Barbados beckons as you touch down at the Grantley Adams International Airport from its rugged coasts and alluring botanical gardens to military forts and colourful chattel houses. Daily flights to Barbados are operated by British Airways, Air Canada, American Airlines, JetBlue, WestJet, Caribbean Airlines and LIAT.
The island is divided into 11 parishes and its capital city, Bridgetown, is located in St. Michael. Home to businesses, schools and markets, it is also one of the oldest in the Caribbean, having been founded in 1628. With a gorgeous location on the beautiful beach of Carlisle Bay, Bridgetown is easily explored by foot. Stroll along the Careenage and admire the sleek catamarans on the jetty. Visit the Parliament and the National Museum or do some duty-free shopping on Broad Street. The capital is worth a visit if you manage to tear yourself away from the fabulous beaches and superb ocean. Speightstown in St. Peter is the country's second most important city, renowned for its modern marina (Port St. Charles), historic colonial buildings, fisheries complex and pretty esplanade.
